Marcus won the toss and on a warm but grey morning elected to bowl and the opening bowlers, Will and Dill, bowled quickly and accurately. Each claimed a wicket and were unlucky not to get more. The Stirlands batsman then started to accumulate runs quickly, mainly through some big hitting to the small boundaries square of the wicket but also due to a generous helping of ‘extras’ from the Middleton bowling. A big score looked to be on the cards but accurate bowling from Kyan (2 wickets) and Marcus who claimed a ‘hatrick’ meant that the total score was kept to a gettable 182.
9 wickets were claimed by Middleton which was a good effort against a strong batting side.
Toby and Ethan got the Middleton reply started and Toby looked in great form and struck 2 boundaries from the first over, however good bowling kept him away from the strike and only 4 more runs were scored in the next 3 overs. Dill and Neo batted next, Dill scoring 16 with 2 great boundaries, although another 2 wickets fell and only a net 8 runs were scored. Will and Harvey were in next and Will was determined to increase the scoring which he did at first with 4 boundaries but the risky shot making meant he was out twice, Harvey batted well on debut for 5. This meant the last pair of Marcus and Kyan needed to score 33 runs for victory. This looked possible when Marcus hit two 4s but then the runs dried up, and we fell 15 runs short of the target.
A good effort by the boys in which a reduction in extras in the field and more selective shot making whilst batting would have made the match even closer.
Thanks to Russell Barton for scoring, much appreciated!
