Well what a start to the festival – a thriller that went down to last ball, just a shame it wasn’t us who won!
After Middleton lost the toss EP decided to bowl. At 18 for 1 after 11 overs that looked like the right decsion. However then Messrs C Bellamy and J Carter decided to up the ante a little with some very fine stroke play against some strong bowling.
James finished on 37 whilst Christian scored a well earned 66. Murray also backed up Christain with a very positive 26.
Overall I was very pleased to see some very positive and aggressive batting. Perhaps England winning the Ashes has helped !!
Middleton ended on 179 for 8 after 37 overs (1 run shy of full batting points). EP were therefore set a target of 180 in 33 overs.
They started off very well reaching 50 in the 11th over and 100 after 20 overs with only losing 2 wickets (Louis Storey scored 57). After 27 overs they were on 156 for 3 and it looked like it was over. But then Ben, Sam & George came back on to bowl the last 6 overs. The next 3 overs only saw 6 runs being given away. So 18 runs of the last 18 balls was required. 7 runs were needed off the last over and 2 off the last ball, which unfortunatley they got with a 4. So EP finished on 182 for 5.
Our fielding was not up to its usual high standards, which is very unusual.
Ben finished with 2 wickets, Sam, George & Matt with 1 each.
The match was played in a very good atmosphere with both sides playing their part. It was a pleasure to umpire.
Onto Stirlands tomorrow.
See you there if you are playing.
