Well what a great well to start this year’s U12’s Sussex Junior Cricket Festival with an excellent advertisement for colts cricket played in a wonderful spirit between two of the county’s finest cricket clubs.
A fine 3 wicket victory at Priory Park over a strong Chichester team in the Bowl, the highest level of U12’s cricket in the county, by a team consisting of only four 12 year olds was an exceptional performance.
Middleton won the toss and opted to put Chichester into bat first. A fine spell of opening bowling by Sam Bell and Ben Taylor saw the hosts lose 3 quick wickets however gradually Chichester began to steady the ship and reached a respectable score of 121 all out – Sam Bell and Lewis Faint picking up 2 wickets a piece with Ted Mustow on his debut for the U12’s recording excellent figures of 3 for 15.
7 wickets cleaned bowled and a mere 10 wides bowled in 30+ overs reflects what a strong performance this was.
Middleton started their reply confidently and when Jack Dawling was dismissed it was left to Ben Taylor and Sam to build a solid partnership to wrestle the momentum back from the opposition. With wickets continuing to fall a Middleton victory began to look less likely however after James Carter’s rapid 16 off 6 balls Phoenix Ashworth, another of our U10’s, joined Matt Bellamy at the crease.
With 7 wickets down and over 40 runs required the two of them played intelligent and measured cricket, defending the straight ball and hitting the loose one, which saw Middleton record victory with 12 overs to spare.
35 maximum points were secured and with Broadwater and St.Peters drawing we sit proudly on top of the league tonight.
Make no bones about it this was a tremendous victory for our young team and with a rest day tomorrow we can prepare for 3 days of great and, most importantly, enjoyable cricket continuing Wednesday.
