An excellent 19 run victory over a strong East Preston team at the club on Monday 6th May.
Middleton 113-6 (25 overs)
East Preston 94-7 (25 overs)
Batting: Ben Peach 23 n.o., Jack Dawling 21 n.o., Lewis Faint 16, Ollie Humphries 11, Jess Young 10.
Bowling: Ben Taylor 3-10, Jay Cockaday 2-11, Matt Bellamy 1-6.
As reported last week this was an exceptional advert for Sussex U12’s cricket which saw an incredible standard of play from both teams from the outset.
Winning the toss and electing to bat first Middleton went about building a solid innings with a fine opening partnership between Ben and Jack who, faced with equally impressive bowling from the East Preston openers, both reached the league retirement figure of 20 scoring with an array of technically impressive shots.
The opposition’s bowling continued to be tight, as was their fielding, and although runs were proving difficult at times Ollie and Lewis both reached double figures to maintain the 5 an over run rate. Christian coming in at number 3 played some attacking shots whilst Jess Young contributed excellently with a fine knock, scoring a valuable 10 runs, and Middleton completed their 25 overs reaching 113 for the loss of 6 wickets which posed a good challenge for the opposition.
East Preston commenced their innings at a canter however, gradually with some consistent spells of bowling, Middleton began to exert pressure and wickets started to fall.
A spell of controlled bowling by Ben Taylor saw him record figures of 3-10 whilst Jay Cockaday continued where he left off last season taking 2-11. Sam Bell, Matt Bellamy and Jack Doe all bowled well, as did Jess and Lewis, restricting East Preston to 94-7 within their allotted 25 overs.
This was a fine team effort, with excellent contributions throughout, and let us not forget we fielded only 5 players aged 12, with the rest of the team consisting of 9-11 year olds.
With a team spirit which remains second to none and ability throughout the team to match I am more than confident that this squad of players have an enjoyable and successful season ahead of them.
Many thanks to the parents, who turned out in force, for their support and especially to Debbie and Iain for scoring and general assistance, Alison & Ian for organising refreshments and of course Peter who prepared a fine wicket.
