Well following on from the excellent U11’s victory over Chichester last week the U12’s took to the field for their first West Sussex Shield league game of the season, in what can only be described as very hot and summery conditions at the Sports Club, and recorded a fine 4 wicket victory over West Wittering.
West Wittering 81-6
Middleton won by 4 wickets.
Runs for Jack Dawling 21 no, Joe Hill 18, Lewis Faint 11 no.
Fielding a team brimming with younger players, 9 of them playing above their age group, Middleton’s bowlers contained West Wittering batsman for much of their innings with strong all round bowling performances and some excellent fielding over the 25 overs.
Restricting the opposition to 81 runs, wickets were shared with Ollie Humphries taking 2 in 2 balls and only narrowly missing out on a ‘hat trick’, with Jay Cockaday on his U12 debut, Joe Hill and Dominic Hammond claiming a wicket each. Jess Young, also on her debut, bowled well and recorded the only ‘maiden’ over of the innings. A devastating piece of fielding by Ollie also resulted in a ‘direct’ run-out.
Middleton’s response was measured with Jack Dawling and Joe Hill pacing themselves in an opening stand of 36. When Joe departed LBW for 18 wickets started to fall and after Jack retired for 21 it was left to Jack Doe and Lewis Faint to steer the team home with Jack hitting the winning boundary with 2 overs to spare.
What a great all round team effort.
As has always been the case at Middleton it is important that as hosts we make our guest opposition feel as welcome and comfortable as possible during their time at our sports club and as such I once again give my thanks to those parents who gave their support on Sunday through scoring, organising the drinks, clearing up or just simply applauding both sets of players for their efforts on the pitch.
Hopefully we can continue this winning run in our next game which is this coming Monday, 4th June, at the club against Bognor – I will confirm the team based on the availability later today.
